Renowned Artist Anne Meggitt Dies at Age 90

Renowned Saskatchewan artist Anne Meggitt died September 25th, in Victoria, British Columbia, at age 90.

Meggitt was born in 1930 in Florida, to British parents and grew up in England. She began painting during her childhood and studied art at Reading University (1947-1951) under Anthony Betts. Meggitt then moved with her husband, a land surveyor, to Africa, and Meggitt frequently carried around her easel and oil paints to capture the scenes before her.

Meggitt and her family moved to North Borneo in 1960, before moving to Canada in 1977, settling in Regina, Saskatchewan. She took classes at the University of Regina with Ted Godwin, Art McKay, and Frank Nulf (1980-1983), and also explored and painted rural Saskatchewan. She later participated in summer workshops at Emma Lake, Saskatchewan (1989, 1990, 1991, 2001).

From the early 1980s, Meggitt exhibited her paintings throughout Canada and England, and her work is represented in numerous important collections including the MacKenzie Art Gallery (Regina), Canada Council for the Arts, and the Bundanon Trust (Australia).

In 2013 Meggitt moved to Victoria, British Columbia to be closer to family. There she continued her career as a landscape artist, inspired by the west coast rainforest. Meggitt had exhibitions at Martin Batchelor Gallery (Victoria) in 2017, and at the Fortune Gallery (Victoria) in 2019 and 2020.
